"Our cleaning and maintenance services offer simple solutions to enhance safety and efficiency"

Potentially hazardous dust from refractory lined machines, MMMFs, carbon (soot) and general dust can accumulate over the crematory within the space of 6 to 12 months on surfaces, high level ducting and on top of machinery.

More Info

Building ventilation in the crematory often becomes neglected or forgotten about. If ventilation is blocked or restricted more dust can accumulate. Poor air flow, room balance, room temperature and the efficiency of ventilation fans can increase 50% in some cases increasing energy costs.

Major building work like machinery relining or furnace wrecking will create a dust problem. Any work that involves removing insulation, ie replacing a duct will make the crematory into a very dusty environment. Some of these dusts are irritants and potentiolly hazardous and should be treated under COSHH.

Crematorium Chapel Cleaning

Our equipment allows us to reach areas up to 10 meters in height. This gives us access to them impossible reach areas to remove nasty looking cobwebs and settled surface dust from beams, windows & frames, concrete stained glass surrounds and any other unreachable areas.

Pre Open Day Deep Clean

Have an open day coming up? Full deep clean including dust removal, polished and sanitised from top to bottom. Any areas which you require.

Hazardous Dusts

Your health and well-being is paramount, if you can see dust then you’re definitely breathing it in. Dust inhalation can lead to many serious lung illnesses and diseases. The effect of exposure to dust may not only be felt by you, but also by those working in close proximity. Only a tiny amount of silica is needed to cause long term damage to your lungs. Working in crematories we are exposed to potentially hazardous dust.

Refractory Ceramic Fibres (RCFs) as used for insulation, particularly in kilns and furnaces, is a form of man-made vitreous (silicate) fibre (MMVF) and consists of alumino-silicate fibres which can cause irritation of the skin, eyes and upper respiratory tract, many being fine enough to be inhaled and deposited in the lungs.

Man Made Mineral Fibres (MMMF)  are widely used across the building industry. The materials include continuous glass fibres, installation wools made of glass, rock or slag fibres.

Building Ventilation

Under the 1992 Act, mechanical ventilation must be maintained to a working level. You must carry out regular checks and repairs if necessary. As a general rule, if your finger collects dust along the duct opening then it will need cleaning.

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, regulation 5 requires that mechanical ventilation systems used for providing general ventilation are maintained (including cleaned as appropriate, in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair).

Exhaust ventilation systems operate by depressurising the building, reducing the inside air pressure so it’s below outdoor air pressure. The stale air or polluted air (overpressure of machinery) is sucked out via the exhaust mechanism to outside. It‘s then replaced by fresh air from a different source, usually another air inlet vent or mechanical fan. Providing it is working correctly, it has the advantage of providing fresh and enough air consistently. However, it may become more costly, require more energy to operate if the system is not properly maintained.

Pre/Post Works or Furnace Wrecking

We should be aware that furnace wrecking (reline of  machinery) can produce exceptionally high dust levels which may well exceed 100 mg/m3on an 8-hour time-weighted average basis, though such dust will also contain significant quantities of extraneous material, and possibly ceramic fibres.

Aluminosilicate ceramic fibre is used extensively in high-temperature furnace linings where it is replacing traditional firebrick linings as standard refractory insulants. However, reported studies have shown that this material divitrifies relatively quickly at temperatures above 1100°C to form cristobalite, a crystalline form of silica, and mullite. The formation and subsequent release of cristobalite dust during furnace wrecking is a matter of particular concern because of the known danger of contracting silicosis from inhalation of free silica dust.

We should also be aware of ducting insulating material (alkaline earth silicate wool) although not classed as hazardous we should treat it under COSSH regulations and it should be cleaned properly using correct methods and H Class Vacuums

Our Service:

Pre furnace wrecking/reline we can provide or install a portable dust blocker/air scrubber on a weekly hire basis. Its designed to be able to operate 24 hours a day and can continually work to clean the air you breathe while works are carried out. It is suitable for many applications, renovation areas and any other areas where silica dust from concrete, brick grout or mortar may be present.

Post furnace wrecking/reline we can clean and remove the potentially hazardous dust using industrial grade vacuums and equipment
